Tex-Mex Quinoa Stuffed Peppers

Not only were these quinoa stuffed peppers easy to make they were delicious! Honestly I would love to put a tex-mex twist on everything (well not everything, but with bland foods/recipes) -- just add a little cumin, taco seasoning, garlic powder and cayenne to anything and boom you have lots of flavour! I always add loads of cilantro to almost everything as well! This was a nice light dinner.  I did leave the peppers a bit longer in the oven then the recipe required. I like the pepper skin to be a little softer.

On the life front, in a week we are off on our India trip! I finally started packing today. Just have to book a couple of hotels. And figure out couple of flights, and then I will start feeling better about this trip -- just some last minute stress/ figuring out right now!

*Happy Halloween!

10 must watch Halloween movies

My friends, Halloween is here - well in 2 days - but you know what I mean! Growing up halloween was just such an exciting day. Leading up to it I would be creating (or putting together) some elaborate costume. I would go all out - whether it was transforming into an alien, my favourite spice girl or even a witch. I would want to top the amount of candy I got the previous year, so out would come the pillow cases and on would be the layers of clothes we would wear under our costumes, and out we would go. Every year getting to cover more neighbourhood blocks then the last.  We wouldn't waste a minute once we got home, dumping our candy on the carpet and sorting it out. Halloween will forever remind me of my grandmother. It would be early evening and she would don her jacket, grab a chair and sit by the door with a tub full of candy. She was very particular that she handed out the candy and she loved it! The last few years I had taken over, for her health wasn't great. But she would still come over to the front door and supervise if I was handing out the candy right. This will be my first halloween without her.  So this year while handing out candy I will be thinking of her!

As we grew older, a new tradition of sorts was formed. Leading up to halloween we decorate our house, carve pumpkins and bake sugar cookies. On halloween night after handing out the candy is done, we settle down and watch a scary movie. To tell you the truth I've never been a scary movie fan, not because I am scared watching them, but quite the opposite, I get bored! But on Halloween night it's just fun to turn off all the lights and watch a scary movie with my sisters. My sisters and I came up with a list of 10 must watch halloween movies. I would have to say a recent favourite of mine would have to be The Women in Black, definitely worth a watch! Hope you all have a great halloween!

We are still choosing a movie for this year's halloween night. What are some of your scary/horror movie recommendations?

The Plaid Shirt

Plaid seems to be everywhere this fall, so I decided to jump on the plaid bandwagon and purchased this red plaid shirt.  I donned my regular all black shirt dress with black leggings and added this plaid shirt to the mix which really changed up the entire feel to this look and give it a fall touch (see how Prabh styled her plaid shirt here).  I'm looking forward to styling this plaid shirt in various different ways, it's such a fun piece to have in my closet. Now all I'm missing this fall is a good faux leather biker jacket to go with the plaid shirt, for that ultimate 90's look.

In other news, in about 2 weeks, I will be travelling to India with a pit stop in Oxford to meet up with Prabh.  I'm really looking forward to this trip to India. I was last there in 2011 on a volunteer trip. This time I'm planning on more downtime, spending it with my long list of extended family members and of course doing some shopping! I will be gone for about 7 weeks, with Prabh joining me in India for last 2 weeks of the trip. We will continue blogging during the trip - the frequency of blogging will definitely depend on the wifi availability, especially while staying in the village where my mom grew up, but the plan is definitely to continue to blog while on the trip and bring you along! You will also be able to follow along on our Instagram account with the hashtag #fnfindia and we will keep you updated on twitter.

Happy Diwali 2014

diwali

Happy Diwali to all our readers! Diwali is an Indian festival of lights. It's celebrated in different parts of India for different reasons on the same day. But nonetheless everyone lights up Diyas and lights are turned on everywhere, fireworks go off, sweets are eaten, and gifts are exchanged. In general it's a festive, party, lively feeling in the air. Lots of light, gold and shimmer everywhere.

As I said before I really look forward to October. Diwali, Thanksgiving and Halloween all in one month! And I'm one for the holidays. Therefore for all three of these festivities I go all out.  So this Diwali I bought plain diyas and decided to paint them myself. Diyas are lit as part of the festival of lights - diwali - again for different reasons depending on what part of India you are from. They are placed all over the house inside and outside. Super talented Interior Designer Jespreet (who also happens to be my cousin) helped me design and paint the diyas as well as styled this shoot!

Fall Reading List 2014

fall reading list 2014 http://www.footnotesandfinds.com

This fall -- that is the fall after submitting my masters dissertation -- means time to wind down a little, relax and cuddle up with some good reading.  I've not been able to do that for a while. My last year there was no time to do leisure reading considering all the reading I had to do for my Masters. So here are some books I'm looking forward to reading during this down time:

crazy rich asians fall reading list 2014 http://www.footnotesandfinds.com

This was the first book on my fall reading list. Having just finished my Master's dissertation, I wanted to start my reading list with a light fun read.  Kevin Kwan's debut novel delves into the lives of the elite rich in Singapore and what happens when the golden boy Nick falls in love with a "ABC" that is American Born Chinese who knows nothing about Nick's lavish background and super rich family in Singapore.  Check out our Crazy Rich Asians Book Review here

This book was not on my radar until I saw the trailer to the movie.  I was really intrigued by it so decided to read some reviews of the book on goodreads.com and found myself downloading and reading this on my kindle. Amy goes missing on Amy and Nick's fifth Anniversary and eventually everyone is asking if Nick is the Killer.  Let's just say that is just the beginning!

and the mountains echoed fall reading list 2014 http://www.footnotesandfinds.com

I've read and enjoyed all of Khaled Hosseini's novels thus far.
This novel is about "how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations." It follows its characters all around the globe - from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos. Having read Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns I was going to give it a read no matter what.

I've had this downloaded on my kindle for a while (over a year) and haven't come around to reading it. Now that I'm done grad school and seeking some inspiration and motivation in post school life, I think this will be a good time to read this. This is a memoir of 22 year old Cheryl Strayed who takes upon a eleven hundred mile solo hike at the point in her life when she thought she had lost everything when her mother dies and her marriage falls apart.

where'd you go bernadette fall reading list 2014 http://www.footnotesandfinds.com

To be honest this is one of those books that I was drawn to by it's cover.  Bernadette, a revolutionary architect, is best friends with her 15 year old daughter Bee. Bee aces her report card and claims her reward, a family trip to Antarctica. But then her mother, who was becoming increasingly agoraphobic in Seattle, disappears. Bee compiles email messages and documents to correspond with and find her mother. This seems like a light enjoyable read and takes place close by, in Seattle! So why not give this a shot?

quiet fall reading list 2014 http://www.footnotesandfinds.com

I first heard of this book when I watched a Ted Talk by Susan Cain on this topic. I related so much to what she spoke about. I'm an introvert and at time struggle with many things which I think would be much easier if I was an extrovert.  This talk was very insightful and shed a new light on how much of our spaces such as workplaces and schools are designed to benefit extroverts, but if it was recognized and accepted the way introverts like to work or learn it would be very beneficial to employers, students and teachers. "Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so." This book has set out to change the way we see introverts and how introverts see themselves. Seems like a good read for me at this juncture in my life.

I would love to hear what books are on your fall reading list, what are you looking forward to read this fall?

As I have mentioned before I'm been really drawn to the whole monochrome look this fall. I'm loving greys and blacks.  Here I'm wearing my all black look whilst dressing it up with my grey scarves in this super comfy and casual look! I still can't believe that we are already in the middle of October! I absolutely love the month of October. The leaves change colours and you experience the first crispness in the air with the mix of fireworks smoke. There is Thanksgiving, Diwali and Halloween all in the month of October. Doing fireworks during Halloween has become a Vancouver thing, and they are also an integral part of Diwali since it's the festival of lights. Therefore from the beginning of October and well into the new year I can hear fireworks going off at all sorts of hours, with kids having fun and doing them even when they are not supposed to!
