Friday Finds

1. Growing up a person of colour and in particular brown, there were very seldom models, actors and singers in western spaces of advertisement and media that looked like me. In recent years people like MIA, Neelam Gill and Waris Ahluwalia have been challenging the stereotypes and pushing the boundaries for South Asians in these spaces. The H&M "Close the Loop" campaign showcases people from all walks of life: stylish men wearing turbans, fashionista hijabi women, androgynous men and women, para-athletes, and beautifully curvaceous women. If you are interested in learning more about Muslim fashionistas there is also this really cool video featuring Muslim hipsters (aka Mipsterz)!

2. Lawrence Hill's The Book of Negroes is known to be a great piece of literature, garnered many awards and was even turned into a CBC miniseries starring Aunjanue Ellis and Cubba Gooding Jr. In its follow up, Hill has written another novel The Illegal, which is inspired by real Sudanese refugees. This topic is especially pertinent to the current refugee crisis and may provide a better insight into the life and struggle of a refugee, fostering empathy.

3. I found this "26 questions Asians have for white people" entertaining!

4. Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend! We have tried and tested this Vegetarian stuffing recipe--so if you have a Vegetarian family or guest this recipe will do the trick!

  3. I saw that "Questions Asians have for white people" post and I loved it. One thing I wanted to ask my white friends was always "why don't you take your shoes off indoors?" haha. I'm also loving the inclusion of more skin colors in campaigns, and shifting the standard of beauty.
