10 Meaningful quotes on creativity by creatives

I love quotes. And I don't mean those cheesy ones that your aunt or uncles share on facebook or the kinds that hang in your grandparent's homes. I mean ones that remind me of my favourite book in one sentence, or that reach out to me on a spiritual level, that make me contemplate the things I believe in, re-asses my views, that take me to another place without having to leave the comfort of my space, that challenge my argument or ones that so concisely and succinctly articulate what I feel, universal truths or otherwise rather complex ideas. So I thought I would share with you my top 10 favourite creativity quotes by creatives:

1. “Creativity takes courage. ”

Henri Matisse

2. “Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ”
Pablo Picasso, Pablo Picasso: Metamorphoses of the Human Form : Graphic Works, 1895-1972

3. “I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking”
Albert Einstein

4. “You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Maya Angelou

5. “A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince 6. “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”
Friedrich Nietzsche 7. “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”
Brené Brown 8. “It's easy to attack and destroy an act of creation. It's a lot more difficult to perform one.”
Chuck Palahniuk 9. “All profound distraction opens certain doors. You have to allow yourself to be distracted when you are unable to concentrate.”
Julio Cortázar, Around the Day in Eighty Worlds 10. I don't like the idea of spirituality done the way it's done. The only way I could understand it was through creativity, not by going to an Ashram, or finding a guru or joining a temple. I made work out of it.

  1. These are fabulous, the Nietzsche one is my favorite. I love that you describe a great quote as something that reminds you of your favorite book in a sentence. I hadn't ever thought of a quote that way but know exactly what you mean. Beautiful!
