Friday Finds

Friday Finds is a series that Footnotes and Finds runs every friday where we share interesting, informative and fun finds/links from around the web.  Follow along!

THIS WEEK'S FRIDAY FINDS:

1. If you're Canadian and grew up in the 90's you'll remember Heritage Minutes...the only way you seemed to actually retain history since social studies was simply not cutting it because you'd rather be outside. If you're not Canadian, then let me explain. Heritage Minutes are brief 2 minute long videos focusing on great Canadians and Canadian moments that made Canada what Canada is today. It covered everything from the creation of Superman to Winnie the Pooh to the Underground Railroad and even the invention of basketball (yes we Canadians are an awesome bunch).

This past year saw the revival of this beloved and often parodied shared memory and it has been brought back with a desire to be inclusive of different narratives than the previous minutes including Indigenous and female heritage minutes. This Heritage Minute in particular has quickly gained media and audience rave reviews in terms of how powerful a message it is conveying about the history of Canada, Indigenous peoples and residential schools.

2. Keeping with the theme and since it was also National Aboriginal Day this past week, I thought I would share this list of Aboriginal musicians to lookout for. My personal favourite being A Tribe Called Red.

3. Continuing with music and Canada (I'm loving all the theme overlapping happening), two of my favourite Canadian musical acts BadBadNotGood and Kaytranada collaborated on this track.

4. Loving this, this and this, summer dress!

5. Truly inspiring read of a 14 year old Syrian girl who received a phone call from NASA, telling her to get into contact with them when she has graduated University.

This week on footnotes and finds
1. Style File Mahira Khan
2. Harry Potter themed Graduation Party

From the archives

  2. The story of Basketball is interesting depending on who story or history...I am not much of sports history buff but growing up in the United States I thought in got started in our country, not Canada! Lesson, learned!
